Yes, to most. But as to fascism, I would put him closer to outright Nazism. Because in his own words he has essentially inferred that a kind of “Night of the Long Knives” is coming soon after he wins. He could be worse than the the current bunch of European dictators. And what is “the enemy within redolent of”?
From the Washington Post:
“The first is that the most immediate round of comparisons to Hitler was driven not by left-wing paranoia about a second Trump term. It was driven, instead, by Trump’s own words, as relayed by his former chief of staff. It’s Trump who praised Hitler’s control over his generals and Trump who said Hitler did good things, according to Kelly, a retired four-star general. Those were comments he offered reluctantly, apparently doing so only after Trump suggested that the military should be used against any of the “enemy within” should there be unrest on Election Day.
The second is that one of the first people to compare Trump to Hitler was Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), now Trump’s running mate. What changed since Vance offered that comparison in 2016 isn’t how Trump approaches politics. It’s how willing Vance has become to acquiesce to that approach.
So it is with the right writ large.”
Paul,
Good to hear from you and thanks for your thoughts!
I hope sanity prevails.
Best,
Michael
Sanity is seems didn’t prevail. But let us never forget that America does indeed know how to go insane. It went insane in the Vietnam War, this particular instance, the creme de la creme of US insanity. And let us not forget that America, with its mightiest technology LOST THE VIETNAM WAR. It wasn’t the peaceniks, the hippies, or even Middle America which eventually turned against the war that caused this loss. America LOST. LOST. Because the Best and the Brightest were out of their depth. The North Vietnamese were a determined enemy wanting to rid the the country of foreign domination. The French had lost and the French implored the Americans to get out. (Let’s also remember that Eisenhower refused to sign the Geneva Accords, even though Anthony Eden and others implored him to do so) As the southern insurgency grows, America goes crazy, as in Speedy Express in the Mekong Delta, with a “kill anything that moves” policy. But it doesn’t work. And this kind of thing doesn’t win many hearts and minds. Yet after Nixon’s election the war actually widens to Cambodia, the tonnage dropped on Laos to interdict the Ho Chi Minh trail may have been more than that dropped on Vietnam itself. This bespeaks America’s “paranoid style,” as articulated by historiqn Richard Hofstadter. And so it seems not the forward looking but the ugly backward paranoid style has won yet again. But it’s not going to make America great. It’s going to make America perhaps weaker than it has ever been. Sorry for this but Vietnam has been on my mind for a few years now and Fridrik Logevall and others have written some important and quite interesting volumes. And then there’s Nick Turse’s “Kill Anything That Moves, Mark Bowden’s Hue: 1968, etc.
Paul,
Thanks for your thoughts. I’m focusing on the future.

Michael
